Thomas Gage: British, took Minutemen's weapons

Benedict Arnold: Joined Ethan Allan to takeover Ft. Ticonderoga

Samuel Adams: organized Boston Tea Party

Paul Revere: Warned the patriots of British invasion

William Dawes: partner with Revere

George Washington: commanded Continental Army

 

Events

 

"shot heard round the world": the first shot, at Lexington/Concord, MA

First Continental Congress: met in Philly, debated whether to start army,

compromised with Declaration of Rights

Second CC: Decided how to react to fighting, offered "olive branch petition" for last chance at peace with Britain

Battle of Bunker Hill: First big battle the patriots won, showed colonists could defend themselves

 

 

Section 2

 

People:

 

Thomas Pain: Wrote "common sense" and "crisis"

Jefferson: on 2nd cont. congress. main author of "declaration of independance"

Abigail Adams:  agitated for women’s rights,

Patrick Henry: Talked to house of burgesses about forbidding slavery

Benjamin Franklin:

King George III: violated the rights of colonists

 

Events:

 

Writing of the Declaration of Independence (July 4th, 1776)

Writing of “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine

Choosing sides, patriots pulled down a statue of

king george and loyalists fled to Canada

 

1783 MA abolished Slavery, 1784 all of NE ends slavery

 

Section 3:

 

People:

George Washington: general of the Continental Army

 

William Howe:  General of the British Army

 

James Forton:  teenager who served in the Continental Army.

 

Molly Pitcher:  brought water to thirsty Patriot troops.  Her real name was Mary Ludwig Hs. She served in the war by loading cannons after her husband was injured.

 

Lord Dunmore:  issued a proclamation, promised freedom to any slave who fought for the British.
